THE LATEST CLEMATIS

Sue O'Donnell. 12.11.20

The latest clematis late flowering annually,

With a tiny bell shaped flower which is dainty,

Flowering readily in different terrains, which are many,

Boast flowers followed by seedheads which are delicately fluffy.

To grow them is fairly easy,

For their nature is hardy

Although preferring the upper parts, climbing vigorously,

To reach up higher where it may be sunny.

We know the clematis as showy

But this is more likely to be the summer variety,

And in fact amongst the 320 speciality,

The summer clematis are in the minority.

Many latest clematis can withstand cold in its intensity.

The best known are the ‘Lemon Peel’ species, so pretty,

But others show a preference for being coloured delicately.

The latest clematis can scramble, climb and ramble profusely,

From mid summer off and on until autumn.

With flower heads so tiny, they have similar appeal to the fritillary,

Possibly boasting that bigger is not better necessarily!

Come winter they die back to ground level eventually.

A wonderful addition to any garden, being charming in their individuality.

The clematis will grow up a trellis or invade a tree,

Or grow in containers, bringing colour when wintery.

For the evergreen and herbaceous clematis are truly lovely,

Anybody, anywhere will find a favourite feature regularly.

What is this with the latest clematis appealing to me?

It is their seedheads tactile and fluffy,

I would ramble and roam far and wide happily,

Knowing returning to home, a warm welcome awaited me!

Lord, thank You for the many species of clematis. Thank You too, for the latest clematis with seedheads which are so appealing, inviting a touch! Amen.
